In the Laurel, the Storefronts Are the Venues

The Laurel District Association has two free events confirmed for this October, on the 17th and the 24th, and its Santa Stroll page lists a December 6 date. None of them closes MacArthur Boulevard. Each one is hosted by a business, on a restaurant floor, in a yoga studio, in a parking lot or on a patio. So the businesses that open, change owners or close along MacArthur between 35th Avenue and High Street also decide where people in the Laurel get together.

This fall makes that easy to see. A restaurant that opened in 2025 now hosts two of the district's events. A beloved diner was sold this year, and its new owners promised in writing to keep its identity. A longtime cafe held its "grand closing" on the same Saturday as a free concert down the street.

Seven concerts, four rooms

Live in The Laurel is the association's free, all-ages concert series. It runs monthly from April through October, and every show is 7 to 9 p.m. New this year, local youth and student performers open every show at 7 p.m. sharp. The association's own pitch to newcomers is to eat at a participating restaurant during the show, or at another spot on the boulevard before or after.

This is the 2026 season as the association lists it:

Date Act Host Address
Sat., April 18 Nathan X Moody Degrees Plato 4251 MacArthur Blvd
Sat., May 16 Kai the MC with band Left Coast Power Yoga 4148 MacArthur Blvd
Sun., June 21 Orchestra Gold Unplugged Degrees Plato 4251 MacArthur Blvd
Sat., July 18 The Grease Traps Degrees Plato 4251 MacArthur Blvd
Sat., Aug. 22 Carlos Rivera Raíz 3832 MacArthur Blvd
Sat., Sept. 19 Los Alegres Callejeros Golondrinas 4171 MacArthur Blvd
Sat., Oct. 17 Moth Magnet Degrees Plato 4251 MacArthur Blvd

Degrees Plato hosts four of the seven shows, including the season finale. On Saturday, October 17, the rock act Moth Magnet closes the season there, and a youth opener goes on at 7. At least one outside event listing has named a different act for that date. The association's page names Moth Magnet, so check that page before you head out.

The other three hosts are newer to the series or newer to the boulevard. Left Coast Power Yoga cleared its studio for a rap show with a live band in May. Raíz opened in October 2025 with its sibling shop Casa Hechizos at 3832 MacArthur, according to Oaklandside's Laurel gift guide. Within a year it was hosting a Spanish guitar night. A concert series that moves from room to room depends on how many rooms say yes. Each new tenant willing to host gives it one more option.

October 24 starts in a parking lot

Golondrinas did more than host September's cumbia night. Oaklandside reported that it opened in May 2025 in the former Communitē Table space at 4171 MacArthur. Seventeen months later, its parking lot is the starting point for the district's Halloween event.

Halloween in The Laurel is on Saturday, October 24, from noon to 3 p.m. It combines Día de los Muertos activities with trick-or-treating. Start in the Golondrinas lot to pick up a free commemorative trick-or-treat tote bag while supplies last. The lot will have:

  • Themed craft tables
  • Halloween classics to dance to
  • Face painting for kids
  • A photo booth
  • Community altar building
  • Lawn games on the astroturf
  • Snacks from Golondrinas

After the lot, trick-or-treating moves to MacArthur Boulevard merchants between 35th Avenue and High Street. The association says more activities at district businesses are "coming soon," so the full list of participating stops was not public as of early October. Golondrinas and Supreme MMA are both listed among the event's supporters.

The altar building matters most in this lineup. A community altar needs a place where people can return to it and add to it, and in the Laurel that place is a restaurant's parking lot, offered by the restaurant.

December 6 moves between two doors

The Laurel Santa Stroll works the same way, with two businesses as bookends and the sidewalk in between. The association lists it for Sunday, December 6, from 1 to 4 p.m.

  1. 1 to 2:15 p.m. Holiday singalongs, refreshments and photos with Santa at Supreme MMA, 4118 MacArthur Blvd.
  2. 2:15 to 3 p.m. Santa, Ms. Claus and the Mistletoe Carolers stroll MacArthur Boulevard, handing out candy and singing.
  3. 3 to 4 p.m. Ornament-making crafts for all ages, caroling and patio photos with Santa at Dear John, 3807 MacArthur Blvd.

The page doesn't give a year. It still thanks "2025 sponsors" and shows photos from 2025, so confirm the date with the association before you plan around it. The route covers most of the core district, from Supreme MMA near the 4100 block to Dear John in the 3800s.

When a host changes hands

Since the events depend on storefronts, ownership changes on the boulevard deserve a closer look. Three this year affected the Laurel directly.

Sequoia Diner, 3719 MacArthur Blvd. at Loma Vista Avenue. Sequoia was named the East Bay's best breakfast in the 2025 Nosh awards. In January, owner Andrew Vennari confirmed that the decade-old diner was in escrow. Oaklandside reported that he cited the physical toll of ten years running a restaurant, wanting more time with his son, and rising costs. The buyer is Third Vision, which also runs Solano Junction in Albany and Fandee's in Sebastopol. Ramesh Shrestha of Third Vision put the plan this way:

"Our goal at Sequoia Diner is to keep what people already love, respect its history and continue its strong connection with the neighborhood. We plan to keep the name, the identity and the community spirit that make Sequoia special."

The group also said it would keep as many existing employees as possible. By March 21, the San Francisco Chronicle was describing the sale as complete. Former Sequoia staff had also started their own brunch pop-up, Just Vibing, and the Chronicle's restaurant critic called its breakfast excellent. The diner still operates under the Sequoia name at the same address and offers online ordering. Its posted menu still lists all-day breakfast and lunch. The hours published in January may have changed under the new owners, so check them before a weekday visit.

Cafe Santana, 4100 MacArthur Blvd. The original cafe and roastery set its last day for Saturday, August 22, with a "grand closing" celebration, Berkeleyside's Nosh reported. Oaklandside later confirmed that it closed that day, and that the newer Cafe Santana elsewhere on MacArthur, at 2700 MacArthur Blvd., is still open. That second location soft-opened in February. August 22 was also the night Carlos Rivera played Spanish guitar at Raíz, a few blocks away at 3832 MacArthur. No new tenant for 4100 MacArthur has been announced in local coverage. The cafe's own website still lists that address, so use the 2700 MacArthur location for coffee.

Itsumo, 4006 MacArthur Blvd. In late July, Oaklandside reported a new Japanese bistro serving bentos, rolls, ramen and sushi. It appears to be in the former Pa's Papa space, which was also a Japanese restaurant. That fits the pattern of the past two years on this stretch. Spaces turn over without sitting empty for long, and the new tenant often stays close to the old one.

Together, these three changes show how the Laurel's events are built. A restaurant that opened in 2025 hosts both a concert night and the Halloween kickoff. A shop that opened in October 2025 hosted a concert ten months later. A diner sold this year came with a written promise to keep its "community spirit." Next year's concerts will be held wherever the boulevard's businesses agree to host them.

Building a Saturday around the next two dates

The two October Saturdays sit a week apart and use different parts of the boulevard. On October 17, the finale at Degrees Plato starts at 7 p.m. with the youth opener. The association suggests eating at a boulevard restaurant before or after the show, and Itsumo at 4006 MacArthur is a new option in 2026. On October 24, the Golondrinas lot opens at noon. Picking up a tote there first sets you up for the trick-or-treating route between 35th Avenue and High Street, which wraps up by 3 p.m.

For a weekday breakfast in between, Sequoia sits at the Loma Vista end of the district. Check its current hours, since the new owners may have changed the January schedule.

Mark Choi keeps track of which East Bay storefronts open, change hands and close, because those changes shape how a block feels day to day. If you're wondering how changes along MacArthur Boulevard might affect your corner of the Laurel, or you're thinking about a home within walking distance of these events, reach out. Mark is happy to talk it through.
